Merit Badge Counselors teach, mentor and coach scouts as they work on individual merit badges.  The main requirement is to have an interest in working with scouts and knowledge of the subject.  You can review the official BSA requirements for Merit Badges (scroll to bottom of page), to see if you have the skills and knowledge to teach the merit badges you have an interest in.

Requirements to be a Merit Badge Counselor:

  • 18 years old (21 for certain MBs)
  • Current on Youth Protection Training
  • Register as a Merit Badge counselor (position code 42), there is NO FEE for this
  • Submit a Merit Badge Counselor Information form (BSA #34405)
  • Approved by District Advancement Committee
  • (Recommended) Take the on-line, fast track training
  • (Recommended) Take Merit Badge counselor training at a District Day of Training or at University of Scouting in January

Merit Badge Counselor is a District position, even if you only work with scouts in your unit.  We encourage all MB Counselors to be available to scouts from other units as well.  Once you register, the District will re-register you every year for as long as you want to continue and you maintain your Youth Protection certification.

  • If you think you are a counselor for one of these badges, your registration has expired; Please contact us to re-register.
